IIS 6.0 can be
managed only through the MMC but IIS 7.0 has introduced a new feature where we
can use Remote Management to connect it from the remote location. Remote
Management in IIS 7.0 must be explicitly enabled unlike in IIS 6.0. You must
also remember that Remote Management is only possible in Windows Server 2008.
IIS 7.0 on Windows Vista does not support Remote Management when it was
released.
There are few steps
to enable remote management of IIS 7.0 server:-
1. Install the Web
Management Service (WMSVC)
2. Enable remote connections
3. Other features can be optionally configured like HTTPS binding (port, IP
address and so on)
4. Start WMSVC service
How to Install the Web Management Service (WMSVC)
1. Open the Server Manager from the Start menu.
2. Select the Roles and scroll down
to the Web Server (IIS).
3. Click Add Role Services and
select the Management Service component.
How to Enable Remote Connections
1. Open the Internet Information
Services (IIS) Manager from the Start
Menu.
2. Click on the Server name and
click on the Management Service
under Management component.
3. Select the check box "Enable
remote connections" and here we can also set the IP address/ port
number filters.
