ISM³

The Information Security Management Maturity Model (ISM³ or ISM-cubed) The Information Security Management Maturity Model (ISM³ or ISM-cubed) extends ISO9001 quality management principles to information security management (ISM) systems. Rather than focusing on controls, it focuses on the common processes of information security, which are shared to some extent by all organizations. Under ISM³, the common processes of information security are formally described, given performance targets and metrics, and used to build a quality assured process framework. Performance targets are unique to each implementation and depend upon business requirements and resources available. Altogether, the performance targets for security become the Information Security Policy. The emphasis on the practical and the measurable is what makes ISM3 unusual, and the approach ensures that ISM systems adapt without re-engineering in the face of changes to technology and risk.

Risk Management

Risk management Risk management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. Risks can come from uncertainty in financial markets, project failures (at any phase in development, production, or sustainment life-cycles), legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, natural causes and disasters as well as deliberate attack from an adversary or events of uncertain root-cause. Several risk management standards have been developed including the Project Management Institute, the National Institute of Science and Technology, actuarial societies, and ISO standards. Methods, definitions and goals vary widely according to whether the risk management method is in the context of project management, security, engineering, industrial processes, financial portfolios, actua...

Information Security Management (ISMS)

Image
Information Security (IS) Information security is designed to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of computer system data from those with malicious intentions. Confidentiality, integrity and availability are sometimes referred to as the CIA triad of information security. This triad has evolved into what is often called the Parkerian hexad, which includes confidentiality, possession (or control), integrity, authenticity, availability and utility. Information security handles risk management. Anything can act as a risk or a threat to the CIA triad or Parkerian hexad. Sensitive information must be kept - it cannot be changed, altered or transferred without permission. For example, a message could be modified during transmission by someone intercepting it before it reaches the intended recipient. Good cryptography tools can help mitigate this security threat. Digital signatures can improve information security by enhancing authenticity processes and prompting indiv...

ISO 27001

What is ISO 27001? ISO 27001 is the formal standard against which organizations may seek independent certification of their Information Security Management Systems (meaning their frameworks to design, implement, manage, maintain and enforce information security processes and controls systematically and consistently throughout the organizations). The standard covers all types of organizations (e.g. commercial enterprises, government agencies and non-profit organizations). It specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing, maintaining and improving a documented ISM within the context of the organization’s overall risk management processes. It specifies requirements for the implementation of security controls customized to the needs of individual organizations or parts thereof.
